The composite rubber sealing strip for marine cargo hatch covers is usually composed of a surface layer (dense rubber) and an inner core layer (foam rubber) through composite processing. It combines the advantages of both layers, featuring good strength and weather resistance as well as excellent compressibility and sealing performance.
Hardness:
The Shore A hardness of the surface layer compound is generally required to be between 50±5 and 55±5. A moderate hardness ensures the sealing strip fits well with the hatch cover to achieve effective sealing.
Tensile Strength and Elongation at Break:
The tensile strength shall be not less than 8MPa and the elongation at break shall be not less than 350%, so as to prevent the sealing strip from breaking easily under stress, enable it to recover quickly after deformation and maintain its sealing performance.
Brittle Temperature:
Generally required to be not higher than -30℃ to -40℃, ensuring the sealing strip remains flexible and free from brittle fracture in low-temperature environments.
Aging Resistance:
After hot air aging at 70℃ for 96 hours, the changes in hardness, the rate of change in tensile strength and the rate of change in elongation at break shall be within a specified range. Meanwhile, the sealing strip shall have good ozone resistance, showing no cracks under the conditions of 50×10⁻⁸ ozone concentration, 20% stretching, and 40℃ for 24 hours.
Compression Set:
The compression set shall be less than 40% to ensure the sealing strip maintains excellent sealing performance under long-term compression.
Installation:
Ensure the surfaces of the hatch cover and coaming are clean and flat during installation. The sealing strip shall be accurately positioned and firmly fixed to avoid distortion, wrinkling or loosening. For adhesive-type sealing strips, a suitable adhesive shall be used and bonding shall be carried out in accordance with the specified process to ensure bonding strength.
Maintenance:
Inspect the appearance of the sealing strip regularly for cracks, wear, aging and other defects, and replace it promptly if damaged. Keep the surface of the sealing strip clean to prevent debris accumulation from affecting the sealing effect. During the ship's maintenance and overhaul, check whether the compression amount of the sealing strip is appropriate and make adjustments if necessary.
